The threat of Healthcare Reform has physician groups, both large and small, considering their options. Some larger multispecialty groups and associations are considering their ability to qualify as Accountable Care Organizations. Many solo and small group practices are considering affiliation with local hospitals. Even the most staunchly independent physicians in many specialties are faced with the decision to affiliate with a hospital, or to choose between competing hospitals. Some independent physicians will be forced to sell and become employed by a hospital for strategic or financial reasons. Some physicians will choose to remain independent, but will affiliate with only one hospital and disassociate from all others. Still other physicians will allow a local hospital to place employed physicians in their independent medical practices. All of these decisions and others have significant implications for private practice physicians, including continued access to patient referrals, access to capital, access to management expertise, access to technology, and more. In “Can’t We All Just Get Along?,” Marc Halley discusses the current market realities faced by many independent physicians who feel increasing pressure to align with a hospital, oftentimes through employment. He shares the experience Halley Consulting has had working with physicians to identify, analyze and select the “right” hospital affiliation partner.

Speaker:
Marc D. Halley, MBA is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Halley Consulting Group, LLC. A 25-year industry veteran, Marc is a frequently-requested speaker, addressing governing boards, senior executives, physician groups, management teams and national organizations. He has authored several articles published in Healthcare Financial Management, MGMA Connexion, Trustee, and the Journal of Medical Practice Management. He is the author of three healthcare strategy books, released by Health Administration Press, Greenbranch Publishing, and the AHA Press.
